About me

My name is Daniel van Duinkerken, I am 39 years old, originally from the Netherlands but now living in Tasmania. I have been obsessed with nature all my life. As a 5-year old, I was constantly pestering my mother to take me to the local aquarium. As a teenager, my favourite subjects were Biology and Natural Sciences.  After high school, I started studying Biology, eventually completing a Master’s degree in Behavioural Ecology, followed by doing research in Mozambique.

Daniel van Duinkerken About Me

Photography was always a constant. I got my first camera at the age of 15. Over the years I taught myself wildlife, underwater and landscape photography. After seeing a good chunk of the world travelling, I decided that Tasmania is the place I want to live. Remoteness, magnificent forests and odd creatures like the Platypus and Tasmanian Devil are what gets my heart racing. And to get a unique shot of these, even more. My photography aims to inspire and (re)connect people with the awe and wonder of the natural world and to bring up important conservation issues such as native forest logging.

I have filmed for multiple international documentaries for the ABC, PBS,  National Geographic and Netflix. I firmly believe that nature documentaries are important in conservation as they can highlight environmental problems and solutions for a very wide audience. In 2021 and 2024 I have had images that have been displayed in the South Australian Museum in Adelaide for the 'Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year' awards.
